Knight Journalism Award Helps Put "Hostile Elements" on Notice

Pakistani journalist Umar Cheema, winner of the 2013 Knight International Journalism Award, credits the award with sending a message to “hostile elements” that violence against journalists “will not go unnoticed.”

A special investigative correspondent for Pakistan’s largest English-language daily, The News, Cheema received the Knight Award for producing high-impact stories in the face of violent attacks.

Community Radio Increases Awareness of Health Topics in Ethiopia

Inspiring Ethiopian journalists to write health stories may sound easy, but in a country where the media compete to cover crime, sport and entertainment, health is usually the last topic of choice.

Finding ‘Ever Clever Ways’ to Create Sustainable Revenue for Newsrooms

The number of media start-ups is at an all-time high, according to Jan Schaffer, executive director of The Institute for Interactive Journalism’s J-Lab. But “the only way you can [sustain] that is to figure out what your revenue streams are going to be,” she said in a talk with 16 Latin American journalists who are in the U.S. as part of ICFJ’s “Digital Path to Entrepreneurship and Innovation for Latin America” program.

ICFJ Fellows Win Prestigious Reporting Awards for International Stories

Seven participants in ICFJ’s international reporting fellowships for U.S.-based journalists recently earned top awards for outstanding coverage.

As fellows in the 2014 Bringing Home the World International Reporting Fellowship and the Social Justice Reporting for a Global America Fellowship, the journalists received funding and support to pursue stories overseas. They tackled topics such as immigration, religion and sexual exploitation.
