We Will Not Be Silenced

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is outraged and saddened by the gruesome attacks on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. Twelve people were murdered and others injured in the magazine's offices in Paris by masked terrorists.

"We exist to expose acts of barbarism—and it's terrifying when the press is the target of such acts," said ICFJ President Joyce Barnathan.

HacksLabs announces Transparency & Accountability Challenge 2014 for Latin America


_Media entrepreneur Mariano Blejman founded HacksLabs, Latin America's first data journalism accelerator, earlier this year as part of his ICFJ Knight Fellowship. The idea for HacksLabs "came from years of frustration and wasted energy," Blejman wrote in April.

Announcing the 2014 HacksLabs Challenge

The first DataJournalism Accelerator Fund for Latin America launches the HacksLabs Challenge 2014 today with US$100,000 in grants for Latin American projects selected in two rounds. This fund is supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the World Bank Institute, the International Center for Journalists ( ICFJ ) and Knight-Mozilla Open News.

Twenty Finalists Emerge in $1 Million Story Challenge

Nairobi, Kenya - Twenty journalists have been shortlisted as finalists in the $1 million African Story Challenge, a new programme of reporting grants to encourage innovative, multi-media storytelling that aims to improve the health and prosperity of Africans.

The two-year project encourages journalists to experiment with new content ideas and ways to engage audiences through mobile technology, social media and other innovative tools.

Winners of Vaccine Reporting Contest Focus on Barriers and Successes in Eradicating Polio

Journalists from Nigeria, Côte D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates are winners of the first journalism competition on coverage of vaccines and immunizations. In well-documented multimedia and broadcast reports, most spotlighted the challenges—and victories—in eliminating polio.

“The winners produced coverage that serves as lessons to all in how to conquer devastating yet preventable diseases such as polio,” said ICFJ President Joyce Barnathan.

2013 International Reporting Fellows to Focus on Key Social Issues

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) has selected 14 participants from the United States to report on everything from immigration to women’s health in the 2013 Bringing Home the World: International Reporting Fellowship Program for Minority Journalists. ICFJ also selected six U.S. journalists as fellows for the inaugural Social Justice Reporting for a Global America Program.

The fellows were chosen from a record 200 applications based on the quality of their proposals. Participants will report from abroad on issues that resonate with their local audiences.

How Innovators Aim to Disrupt African Media

Fact-checking the media, drone journalism and journalists' security were among the topics on the minds of more than 500 innovators vying for startup capital to disrupt African media.

The African News Innovation Challenge will provide US$12,500-US$100,000 to about 20 startups.
