The Challenges of Fact-Checking the Brazilian Presidential Election

Ahead of the country’s presidential election, Brazilian journalists braced for an avalanche of disinformation. A group of journalism organizations formed a coalition to verify information, fact-checkers worked nonstop, and journalists used new strategies for reporting and verifying facts. The unprecedented scale and speed of fabricated content designed to influence the 2018 elections across social media, combined with the largely unregulated social media landscape, made the task of fact-checking more daunting.

‘Implant Files’ Investigation Sheds Light on Dark Side of Medical Devices

Defective medical devices — and the lack of laws or enforcement against them — have killed thousands of patients around the world and put millions more at risk. Deficient implants may be poorly constructed or use untested or fake medical materials. Shoddy implants may fail, causing pain, loss of mobility and even death. Yet, in my country and many others, few people were aware of the hazards. The multi-million-dollar medical implant and medical device companies are shrouded in a myriad of scandals related to conflicts of interest, corruption and abusive practices toward patients.

ICFJ Welcomes Reversal of Unjust Verdict in Egypt

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) welcomes the verdict Thursday to acquit five of its employees, who were unjustly convicted in Egypt in 2013. The five defendants -- Americans and Egyptians -- worked for ICFJ on programs that helped Egyptian journalists better report about issues in their communities. The acquittal finally
