Dow Jones Chicas Poderosas Digital Fellowships

Women in the developing world face even greater challenges than their developed-world counterparts breaking into IT and taking leadership roles in the field – especially when it comes to news media. Chicas Poderosas is addressing this challenge by helping to bring Latina women in the Americas into the forefront of digital journalism.

Training the Next Generation of Malian Media Professionals

In partnership with the U.S. State Department, the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) brought four Malian journalists to the United States for a professional internship program. The visiting journalists had the opportunity to observe U.S. newsrooms operations as well as learn new skills to enhance their journalism careers. The program sought to accomplish the following: to demonstrate U.S. and international journalistic practices and ethics through practical, hands-on experience.

Improving Data-Journalism Skills in Morocco

In October 2016, the International Center for Journalists, in partnership with Code for Africa, will bring together 75 journalists, editors, technologists, civic watchdogs and digital designers in Casablanca, Morocco, for an intensive, three-day data boot camp.

Dow Jones Chicas Poderosas Fellowships

Women in the developing world face great challenges breaking into IT and taking on leadership roles in the field – especially in news technology and design. Chicas Poderosas is addressing this challenge by helping to bring Latina women in the Americas into the forefront of digital journalism.

Created in 2013 by visual storyteller Mariana Santos as part of her ICFJ Knight Fellowship, the Chicas Poderosas movement aims to increase the number of Latina women working directly with newsroom technology.

ICFJ Anywhere: Branding for Media Professionals

As a part of the Unlocking the Economic Potential of Digital Media program, the International Center for Journalists organized a six-week online course on January 15, 2015 entitled "Branding for media professionals." The online course, created especially for this program, aimed to teach the 29 participants how to use digital tools to build their "brands" or promote their enterprises by cultivating an image or reputation.

Unlocking the Economic Potential of Digital Media

The Professional Fellows program is open for professional and citizen journalists, media business managers, digital media entrepreneurs and technologists from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The accepted fellows will be asked to create media business models that harness the power of digital tools to generate sustainable new revenue. They will be matched with expert U.S.
